Clothespin Butterflies

These adorable little crafts are easy to make and a perfect way to teach children about symmetry and encourage their artistic skills. Plus, they’ll love playing with their handmade butterflies afterward! My kids had such a blast making these, and I was pleasantly surprised by how many times they’ve asked to do it again. We now have at least 20 of these clothespin butterflies fluttering around our home, each one unique and colorful.

Here’s how you can make your own clothespin butterflies with just a few simple materials and steps.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Paper

  • Clothespin

  • Q-tip

  • Paint

  • Hot glue gun

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1.Cut Out the Butterfly Wings

Start by cutting out a butterfly shape from your paper. Make sure it’s shorter than the clothespin so it fits nicely.

2. Prepare a Paper Strip

Cut a strip of paper slightly shorter than the wingspan of the butterfly. This will be used later to make the “fluttering” mechanism.

3. Decorate the Butterfly Wings

Dip a Q-tip in paint and use it to create fun designs on one side of the butterfly wings. Think dots, lines, or any pattern you like—it’s a great opportunity for kids to get creative!

4. Create Symmetry

Fold the butterfly wings in half while the paint is still wet. This will press the paint onto the other side, creating a symmetrical design. Use this step to explain the concept of symmetry to your kids—why it happens and where else they can see it in nature.

5. Attach the Wings to the Clothespin

Once the paint is dry, use hot glue to attach the blank side of the butterfly wings onto the clothespin, placing it right down the center. Leave enough space at the bottom to ensure the clothespin can still pinch.

6. Add the Paper Strip

Flip the butterfly over and close the wings all the way shut. Dot a small drop of glue near the top of the clothespin and attach the center of the strip of paper. Then, glue the ends of the paper strip onto the back of the butterfly wings while keeping the wings shut.

7. Make It Fly!

Once the glue is dry, your butterfly is ready to take flight! Kids can pinch the clothespin to make the butterfly’s wings flutter, bringing their creation to life.

Why This Craft is a Hit

One of the things I love most about this activity is how engaging and rewarding it is for kids. They get to explore their creativity with color and pattern design, all while learning about symmetry and refining their motor skills. Plus, it’s so simple that even younger children can participate with a little guidance.

This craft has been a favorite in our house, and I hope it will be in yours too. Whether you’re looking for a rainy day activity, a creative addition to a classroom project, or just something fun to do together on a lazy afternoon, these clothespin butterflies are sure to delight.

Happy crafting! Feel free to share photos of your creations—we’d love to see them!
