Easter Eggshell Geodes Crystal Experiment
My kids LOVE geodes, so this was a really fun Easter-themed way to make our own. (Also, hello, egg prices—this is an amazing way to decorate your shells without wasting the egg inside!)
Materials You’ll Need
Eggshells (halved, cleaned, and dried)
Table salt, Epsom salt, or borax
Hot water
Food coloring (optional)
Spoon
Small containers or cups
Step-by-Step Instructions
Prepare the Eggshells
Carefully crack eggs in half and rinse out the interior to make a clean “bowl” out of the shells. Allow them to dry completely, as moisture can interfere with the crystal growth.
Mix the Crystal Solution
Heat water until it is hot but not boiling. Dissolve as much salt, borax, or Epsom salt as you can into the water, stirring until no more can dissolve. Add food coloring to the solution if you'd like your crystals to take on vibrant hues!
Set the Experiment
Place your eggshell halves in a small container or on a plate. Carefully pour the solution into each eggshell, filling them to the brim.
Wait and Observe
Place the container in a dry, undisturbed location. Over the next few days, crystals will begin forming along the inside of the eggshells. Observe daily to marvel at the changes!
The Final Reveal
After a few days, allow the solution to evaporate completely. What’s left is an eggshell sparkling with beautiful crystals!
Tips for Success
Be Patient: Crystals take time to grow. Resist the temptation to move the eggshells too soon.
Experiment with Ratios: Try different amounts of salt or borax for varying crystal sizes and textures.
Use Caution: Since you’re working with hot water, adult supervision is essential for this experiment.
This eggshell geode project is the perfect combination of art, science, and creativity. We hope you enjoy as much as we did!
